A national first has been recorded in Mures County, where a natural gas distribution company has completed a pilot project demonstrating that current installations and appliances can safely operate on blends of natural gas and hydrogen without the need for technical modifications.
The project’s results will be made available to authorities to support the development of the regulatory framework required for utilizing so-called green gases.
Reporter Marcela German: After testing a 20% hydrogen and natural gas blend in previous years, the distribution company has demonstrated that a 30% hydrogen blend is also safe for existing appliances and installations within Romania’s gas network.
In the first phase, conducted in a controlled environment in Medias, several types of household appliances were short-term tested with natural gas blends containing up to 35% hydrogen.
The second phase included tests on high-power non-residential installations and equipment. The appliances functioned properly, and measurements highlighted a reduction in combustion-byproduct compounds, particularly carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.
For this project—which aims to prepare Romanian infrastructure for the integration of green gases and the reduction of carbon emissions—specialists from the distribution company, which operates across 20 counties in northern and western Romania, gained experience and certification in Germany.
Meanwhile, research continues into the production and injection of biomethane into the network, as well as the use of 100% hydrogen within the distribution infrastructure and dedicated hydrogen-use appliances.
